A collaboration between the UU Justice Ministry of California and the GaryMar Academy in Tijuana.
Each UUBorders Journey is unique to its time. Our partners with the GaryMar Academy in Tijuana are constantly responding to the needs of immigrant, migrant, and refugee families near the US-Mexico border, and their availability shifts with each trip. No two trips are exactly the same, allowing for us to provide a realistic and timely learning opportunity for all of our participants. Your trip leader will share your specific itinerary with you upon registration - while the "bookends" of departure from and return to San Diego are consistent for all trips, what happens in Tijuana will depend on when your journey happens.
To give you an example of what you can expect from your trip, here is the itinerary from our 2018 UUBorders Journeys:
Every UUBorders Journey is staffed by one of UUJMCA's experienced Immigrant Justice Action Team members, a chaplain, and members of the GaryMar Academy's leadership. Trip forms, itineraries, and activity details will be sent out to registered attendees in the weeks leading up to the journey. In the meanwhile, registered and interested individuals can send questions to info@uujmca.org if they would like to know more about upcoming UUBorders Journeys.
Interested in bringing a large group from your community or congregation? UUJMCA's UUBorders Journeys can also be scheduled for days that work for YOUR group of eight or more!
"My trip to the Tijuana border was both informative and inspiring. I had no idea what burden the people of Tijuana are bearing for those seeking asylum in the U.S. I was shown shelters that are housing hundreds of people from South America seeking a safe and better life. Meeting a family from El Salvador that was fleeing for their life and stuck waiting in TJ for a court date was especially soul rocking.
The trip to Friendship Park at the border wall was also moving. Seeing people talk to loved ones through a fence was heart-wrenching and inspired a desire in me to work toward a more just and caring immigration reform. I came back with a much better understanding of the asylum-seeking process and inspired to get more involved in immigration reform."
